Here's the thing. Google Assistant has been on death row since Gemini showed up, and the stay of execution is officially over.
Google has begun notifying users via email that it will 'begin removing access to Google Assistant starting on 4 September,' with the rollout expected to 'take a few weeks to reach everyone.' Once that process completes, you will not be able to use or switch back to Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices. No rollback. No fallback.
The shutdown covers Android phones and tablets that meet Gemini's minimum hardware requirements and are in regions where Gemini is available. Wear OS smartwatches, headphones, earbuds, and vehicles running Android Auto will also lose Assistant access. Cars running Google built-in get a temporary reprieve — Assistant stays there for now. Google TV and Google Home devices are untouched by this announcement, so Assistant survives in a few corners of the ecosystem past September.
One narrow exception: Google previously confirmed that a legacy version of Assistant will remain on phones running Android 9 or older with less than 2GB of RAM, to support basic tasks. Everyone else is moving to Gemini whether they asked for it or not.
This is not a surprise. Google had originally targeted 'most mobile devices' for an Assistant shutdown sometime in 2025, then pushed it. That delay is now over. The announcement was first reported by 9to5Google based on the email, and shared in full on Reddit. The Verge noted it had asked Google for confirmation.
If you want Gemini and don't already have it, the app is available on the Play Store. If you'd rather avoid it entirely, your options are limited — which is exactly how platform lock-in works.
Voltage take: Google is doing what every platform does when it wants to bury a product: it stops asking permission. Assistant wasn't killed because it failed users — it was killed because Gemini needs the install base and the usage data. That's a rational business call, but let's name it correctly. Millions of people built routines around Assistant, on watches, in cars, through earbuds, and Google is now unilaterally removing that functionality to push a product many of them never requested. The free market works best when users can choose; forced migrations to AI chatbots are the opposite of that. The Google Graveyard has a new headstone, and this one was perfectly functional when they buried it.
