Sophie Cunningham gives a kid her game shoe and Portland still boos her

The Fever won 112-98, Cunningham scored 13 points, and the most memorable moment of the night had nothing to do with the trans-flag crowd.

Here's the thing. You can pack an arena with protesters, wave flags at a player, and boo every time she touches the ball. Sophie Cunningham will still drain the three, hand a little girl her game-used shoe on the way out, and leave you with nothing.

The Indiana Fever beat the Portland Fire 112-98 on Friday night. Cunningham finished with 13 points and 3 assists. Caitlin Clark posted a triple-double. Those are the numbers. The story, though, was the shoe.

After the final buzzer, Cunningham — who had been welcomed onto the court with boos and fans waving transgender flags — stopped to give a young female fan one of her game-worn sneakers. The moment was captured and circulated widely. It tracks with what Cunningham told ESPN in the profile that started all of this: she said she wants to 'protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men.'

She said it. Then she went out and did a version of it, in the most literal sense possible, in the building where she was least welcome.

The Fever also shut down questions about Cunningham at the post-game press conference, ending it abruptly — which tells you something about how much institutional patience exists for this particular conversation, even inside the league.

Outside the arena, Cunningham supporters held a rally and were met by counterprotesters. Portland, doing Portland things.

Riley Gaines, for her part, has argued publicly that the WNBA is 'hellbent' on being an activist organization over a basketball league. The league has not publicly contradicted that read.

Voltage take: The demo is not the product, and neither is the protest. What actually shipped Friday night was a 13-point performance, a road win, and a kid who now owns a piece of WNBA history. The WNBA's long-term business model depends on filling the pipeline with young girls who want to grow up and play in it. Handing one of them your shoe after getting booed for defending her right to a fair sport is not a controversy — it is the entire point. The league's activist wing is welcome to explain how the flag-waving in Portland grows that pipeline. The changelog so far does not make a compelling case.
